SUMMARY:The History of African-Descended Soldiers and Civilians Serving in the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of African-descended soldiers and civilians serving with both the Continental Army and with Loyalist troops in the British Army.  Special attention will be paid to individuals serving in New York as well as the impact of the Philipsburg Proclamation\, which was signed at Philipse Manor Hall in 1779. \nSpeakers are:\nSarah Wassberg Johnson is the programs and education manager at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic site in Yonkers\, NY.  She has a master’s in public history from the University at Albany and has been working in history museums since 2007.  She started her research into Black loyalists and patriots in 2023 and hasn’t stopped since. \nMatt Thorenz\, a historian who specializes In the American Revolutionary period and writes about the Black experience in the Continental Army since 2015.  He has a master’s in information science from SUNY Albany and serves as the Local History & Government Docs Librarian at Newburgh Free Library. \nNo charge to attend.

SUMMARY:Firearms of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years\, Ron Toelke has participated in historic reenactments\, learning the use of such firearms as the British Brown Bess\, various French muskets and other period flintlock weapons.  He helped form a Revolutionary War reenactment group of the 7th Albany militia\, and later\, units of the Continental First New York Regiment. \nSeveral reproduction flintlock firearms will be demonstrated along with the necessary accouterments and other items needed to operate these weapons. There will be no live firing. \nNo charge to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 5\, at 2pm\nPresented by –Tim Hawley and Krystyna Poray Goddu \nFree Educational Talk at Old Austerlitz Church\n\nTo celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s arrival at Steepletop\, her home in Austerlitz from 1925 until her death in 1950\, the AHS will present a program on Millay in Austerlitz. Drawing on Millay’s diaries\, letters\, photographs taken at Steepletop during her life there\, and some memories of Austerlitz residents\, Edna St. Vincent Millay Society Literary Officer Krystyna Poray Goddu and AHS board member Tim Hawley will evoke the time when America’s best-loved poet and her husband\, Eugen Boissevain\, were familiar faces to Austerlitz residents.\n \nGoddu\, author of the 2016 biography A Girl Called Vincent: The Life of Poet Edna St. Vincent Millay\, will discuss Millay’s childhood in Maine\, her years at Vassar College and in Greenwich Village\, and her ground-breaking poetry. The presentation will also look at Millay and Boissevain’s transformation of the abandoned blueberry farm in Austerlitz\, which they named Steepletop\, into their beloved home: a working farm with flower\, herb\, and vegetable gardens; Millay’s writing cabin; guest houses; a tennis court overlooking the Berkshire hills\, and a sunken garden with a spring-fed swimming pool.\n \n \n

As an Art Education major in college\, she learned\nbasket weaving and loom weaving in the “Fibers and Fabrics” course\, a\nfavorite. \nSandy offers workshops at the Shaker Heritage Society in Albany and at\nHancock Shaker Village\, MA. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 19 at 2 PM: Gee’s Bend: The Legacy Lives On – Presented by Lisa Bouchard Hoe\, Spencertown Academy Board Member and Quilter (with quilt exhibit) \nCome see and hear about the quilts of Gee’s Bend\, created in the 1800’s by a group of women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee’s Bend\, Alabama.  Hailed by the New York Times as “some of the most miraculous works of Modern Art America has produced.” \nLisa will also discuss the changes global fame brought to the Gee’s Bend community\, and how the legacy of the original quilters not only lives\, but has grown to embrace the younger generation.\nThe Spencertown Academy Arts Center in collaboration with the Austerlitz Historical Society is hosting this once in a lifetime exhibit.
